Founder, Host/Executive Producer

Mable Chan is a Peabody Award-winning broadcast news producer turned media entrepreneur.  She was an “Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business” awardee in 2013.

In the summer of 2017, she founded “One in a Billion Productions Inc” (a 501 c 3) a non-profit educational media group. It is home of the “One in a Billion” podcast, blogs, video stories with a global community of Asians, and Americans passionate about personal story-sharing, mentoring and networking.

Mable believes in the power of personal storytelling and deep listening to advance intercultural understanding, social progress and mutual success between Asians and Americans.

Mable Chan 陳美寶 is a Hong Kong-born, multi-lingual (Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Japanese) producer with more than 20 years of experience with American network television. Mable has traveled the world covering major stories in China, Japan, and America for ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and Fox. An award-winning producer, Mable has achieved excellence in journalism with top honors including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow, the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia, the George F. Peabody, The George Polk, and the National Headliner awards.

Mable began her broadcast journalism career at WWOR-TV in New York after obtaining her Bachelor’s degree from S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.  She moved to Hong Kong to become a principal anchor/reporter for Hong Kong Television Broadcasts (HK-TVB). During her tenure as a foreign correspondent, Mable filed news reports from China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Britain, and Switzerland – from mass protests and plane crashes to ordinary people’s struggles with natural disasters and daily survival.

Mable is widely recognized in the media industry for her creativity, drive, energy, amicable personality, and professional commitment to deliver the highest quality production.

A Harvard graduate with a master’s degree in East Asian Studies (AM’93), Mable has recently finished her one-year appointment as a visiting scholar at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard (2010-11), and remains an “Associate-in-Research” at Harvard.

  • Began broadcast journalism career as the first foreign-born production assistant at a local TV station in New York.
  • Received promotion after 2 years to associate producer for the weekly news magazine “New Jersey People.”
  • Became on-air reporter for Chinese TV channel “Apple-TV” covering crime and feature stories in New York’s Chinatown.
  • Returned to Hong Kong to begin on-air reporting/anchoring career at TVB News.
  • Began foreign correspondent career on special assignments including – China, South Korea,Vietnam, and Cambodia.

1990s

  • Won first “Gold Medal” – International Film & TV Festival of New York
  • Best On-going News Coverage – “Vietnamese Boat People”
  • Best Breaking News Coverage – “Macau Illegal Immigrants”
  • Met Emperor Akihito & Empress Michiko of Japan as one of the “Ten Outstanding Young People” (TOYP) chosed by the Oaska Junior Chamber of Commerce
  • Began American network news career at CBS News as associate producer with the international news desk in New York.
  • Became producer at Court-TV – America’s first cable news channel on crime stories. Supervised team coverage of the O.J. Simpson Civil Trial in California.
  • Began freelance producing for CNN, FOX, ABC News.

2000s

  • Produced award-winning reports at “Dateline” NBC News, received network recognition for September 11th special coverage, top honors for investigative journalism including The Columbia DuPont Award, The George F. Peabody Award. Met some of the most talented, nicest producers who’ve become friends for life.
  • Produced for Good Morning America, ABC News, won National Headliners Award -Best Network Coverage on “Katrina: 6 Months Later.” Found a circle of colleagues with a heart of gold.

2010s

  • Accepted as visiting scholar at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard. Taught the undergraduate tutorial “Producing for TV,” presented a seminar on Western Media Partnerships with China”, and delivered a pre-commencement speech to Asian students at Harvard.
  • Founded China Personified LLC華人格化 a media production company (internet/TV) with a focus on Chinese people, character and culture.
